Our community never ceases to amaze me! If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, you’ll see I love to share positive stories of knitters and crocheters coming together to create change in their lives or the lives of others. Whether it’s knitting little hats for premature babies, mats for animals in shelters, or even beautifying spaces through yarnbombing, there’s always an opportunity to do something wonderful with yarn. We love knitting, and we love giving back, so here is a way to combine them!
Are you interested in crafting a project to help someone or an animal in need? Here are 5 charities that use knitting to make the world a better place.
The Mother Bear Project
Every child deserves a teddy bear, and The Mother Bear Project is making sure tons of children do! The Mother Bear Project mission is to provide hope and comfort to children impacted by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knitted or crocheted bear. Each gifted hand-knitted bear has a tag signed by the knitter with the message that they are unconditionally loved.
Knitted Knockers
For those who have battled with breast cancer, Knitted Knockers has helped countless women establish newfound confidence. Knitted Knockers provides knitted prosthetic to women who have had a mastectomy. Knitted Knockers are when placed in a bra has the shape and feel of a real breast.
These are some great organizations spreading the love of knitting, with a cause. And remember, you can always give back by gifting a project that you made with love to someone you know or who may have helped you out during a time of need.
The Snuggles Project
Even our furry loved ones deserve a nice knit. The Snuggles Project is making waves in the knitting and charity community with handmade knits (Snuggles) for animals. After being given a Snuggle, a frightened and/or difficult to handle animal is able to become calm. The Snuggles also provides a more homey environment for our furry loved ones.
Warm Up America
Warm Up America is a foundation that was founded by Evie Rose in 1992. They are committed to motivating, training and coordinating volunteers to knit and crochet afghans and clothing for people in need. Warm Up America ships afghans to various charitable organizations and agencies for distribution to the homeless and those in need.
Knots of Love
Knots of Love is another amazing knitting charity, with volunteers that hand-knit and crochet caps for those struggling with treatment-induced hair loss, as well as tiny neonatal blankets for fragile newborns in incubators. The mission of Knots of Love is to remind the patient and their loved ones that they are not alone. All handmade creations are distributed free of charge to hospitals and treatment centers throughout the country.
